RecordingCat Privacy Policy

Last updated: October 22, 2026.

This policy explains how RecordingCat handles data when you use the Mac app. No account is required. DeepSeek text requests are sent directly from the app to DeepSeek, without passing through a RecordingCat-operated server. RecordingCat is for Apple silicon Macs with macOS 14 or later.

Data kept on your Mac

Recorded or imported audio, raw transcripts, notes, and AI conversation history are saved by default in the app’s local data directory or a folder you choose in Settings. Your DeepSeek API key is stored in macOS Keychain. The app also writes technical diagnostic logs locally to troubleshoot recording and transcription problems. Logs may contain technical information such as events, timestamps, error codes, and capture state; they are not intended to contain audio, transcript text, or API keys.

You can choose a different save location. If you select iCloud, another cloud drive, an external disk, or a shared folder, the relevant system or service may access, sync, or back up files there under its own terms and privacy policy.

Hugging Face model download

The transcription engine ships with the app. Only after you choose to download does the app attempt to contact Hugging Face for model information and the recommended multilingual model and tokenizer files. The requests come from your Mac, so Hugging Face receives network request information such as your IP address. Connection problems may prevent the download. Downloaded model files are stored in the app’s local Application Support directory. See the Hugging Face Privacy Policy for its handling of service data.

DeepSeek AI text processing

DeepSeek text sharing is off by default. To use AI text features, enter your own DeepSeek API key in Settings and explicitly enable “Allow DeepSeek text sharing.” The key is stored in macOS Keychain and sent to DeepSeek as request authentication; the app does not send it to a RecordingCat-operated server. With sharing enabled, saving a recording or importing an existing transcript automatically sends the transcript text to DeepSeek for cleanup and title generation. You still start note summaries and AI chat yourself; those features send the current note or message text.

You can turn off “Allow DeepSeek text sharing” at any time to stop future AI text requests. Turning it off does not automatically delete content already sent to DeepSeek; DeepSeek’s current policies and service terms apply. Audio is saved on your Mac or in the folder you choose and is not sent to DeepSeek.

These requests include the text you submit and ordinary network request information. DeepSeek’s current policies and service terms govern its collection, use, retention, and deletion of data. RecordingCat makes no separate promise about DeepSeek’s retention period. Read the DeepSeek Privacy Policy before using those features.

Permissions and recording

macOS asks for microphone access when you record microphone audio. Recording system audio asks for the applicable system-audio permission. The app saves audio, not screen images. Once the model is ready, transcription runs locally. The app sends AI text only when you have entered your API key and enabled text sharing. Until then, the raw transcript stays on your Mac.

Purchases and third-party services

The RecordingCat app has no in-app purchases. DeepSeek accounts, API usage, and related service terms may be managed separately by DeepSeek; check the provider’s current information.
